Nelson Airport has frequent connections with the major cities in New Zealand, including the international airports at Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland. Rental cars may be hired from the airport or from other local companies. Or take an inter-island ferry and enjoy touring around the top of the South Island, but do pause at the Mudfish to get your breath back.

If driving from Christchurch allow 6 hours and follow either the inland highway (61) or the coastal highway, perhaps stopping for a whale-watch trip in Kaikoura. If travelling from Nelson, follow the scenic coastal highway (60) or, if you wish to visit some vineyards or potters on the way, take the inland highway (6).

Whichever route you take, the directions are the same from Motueka. Travel through Motueka and Riwaka. Take the right signposted turn to Kaiteriteri once through Riwaka, and follow the road.

At Kaiteriteri Heights, which is the first on the right after Stephens Bay, follow Cederman Drive right to the top. Go right, around the roundabout, and continue on Cederman Drive. The Mudfish Bach is the blue bach on the left at the end of this peaceful, cul-de-sac.
